Well it was a hot one this morning. Being half term, the group was small but we still had a lovely scenic run with great views across Lancaster and the coast. We met up at The Premier Inn Car park on Caton Road and left towards Lancaster to the aqua-duct. We crossed the road and ran up the steps onto the canal path where we mobilised our joints and stretched the muscles we were going to use on todays run (much to the amusement of passing motorists on the Caton Road below).
We turned right and ran towards Lancaster on the tow-path. It was a hot day but we had a lovely breeze blowing to cool us down. After about a mile we took the exit of the canal leading to the Ridge estate. We ran gently up Ridge Hill (not an easy climb but everyone did this really well). Passing Central High School, we carried on until we reached the motorway bridge. The views were beautiful from up here and well worth the hard work of the hill.
We crossed the M6 and took a left fork onto a stony path. Running along this path took a lot of balance and concentration to keep your footing. The path took us downhill and turned into a dirt track which was kinder to our feet. It seemed like along downhill section but we eventually came to the end of the path and found ourselves on Caton Road near Denny Beck Lane. We took water breaks often as the weather was so hot. It is a really good idea to take a running bottle of water with you on hot runs or anytime you will be running for more than 45 minutes to an hour. Dehydration can make you suffer on a run and really affect your performance and your recovery. Hand held running bottles are available for a cheap price at The Runners Centre in Lancaster and many other sports shops.
We took a left turn at Caton Road and headed back towards Lancaster and the Premier Inn. This section was flat and easy to run although the temperature was hotting up so we were all glad to see the Premier Inn coming into view. Turning left into the car park we finished our run. We walked around the bring our heart rates down to normal levels although in this hot weather this can take longer than usual. We had a good stretch in the car park and included a gluteus maximus stretch (buttocks) as these muscles are used a lot in hilly runs. Total mileage was 4.6 miles, well done ladies, a great run was had by all.
